Volga Germans

The Volga Germans were ethnic Germans who settled along the lower Volga in Russia from the 1760s, invited by Catherine the Great with promises of land and religious freedom. In 1924 they received an autonomous Soviet republic. After the German invasion of 1941 Stalin abolished it and deported the whole people, some 400,000, to Siberia and Kazakhstan, and many of their descendants later emigrated to Germany.
