Walter Burley Griffin

1876–1937 · 20th century

Walter Burley Griffin was an American architect of the Prairie School who, with his wife Marion Mahony Griffin, won the international competition of 1912 to design Australia's new capital, Canberra. He directed the city's early construction until 1920, though his plan was only partly realised, centred on the lake later named after him. He later worked in Sydney and died in Lucknow, India.
