William Adelin

1103–1120 · 12th century

William Adelin was the only legitimate son of Henry I of England and Matilda of Scotland, and heir to England and Normandy. He received the homage of the Norman barons and in 1120 did homage to Louis VI of France for the duchy. On 25 November 1120 he drowned when the White Ship sank off Barfleur, leaving Henry without a male heir and opening the way to the civil war known as the Anarchy.
