Yser

Also known as IJzer

The Yser is a river that rises in northern France and flows through West Flanders in Belgium to the North Sea at Nieuwpoort. In October 1914 the Belgian army halted the German advance on its banks, helped by opening the sluices at Nieuwpoort to flood the plain. The Yser front was held by Belgian troops until the final offensive of 1918.
