Zenobia

c. 240–after 274 · 3rd century · Also known as Septimia Zenobia

Zenobia was queen of Palmyra, who ruled for her young son Vaballathus after the murder of her husband Odaenathus in 267. She conquered Egypt in 270 and much of Anatolia, creating a breakaway Palmyrene Empire in Rome's East. The emperor Aurelian defeated her armies in 272, captured her and took Palmyra, and she was displayed in his triumph in Rome.
