Zhang Shicheng

1321–1367 · 14th century

Zhang Shicheng was a salt-boat worker who rose in revolt against the Yuan dynasty in 1353 and set up the state of Zhou, ruling the rich Yangtze delta from Suzhou. He wavered between rebellion and Yuan allegiance, and his troops killed the Red Turban leader Liu Futong in 1363. Zhu Yuanzhang besieged Suzhou and captured him in 1367, and he took his own life soon after.
