Zubarah
Zubarah is a ruined town on the north-west coast of Qatar. Settled in the 18th century by clans of the Bani Utbah, including the Al Khalifa, it grew into a thriving centre of pearling and trade, and in 1783 the Al Khalifa crossed from there to take Bahrain. Claims to it caused disputes between Bahrain and Qatar until 2001. Its excavated remains became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
