Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa
Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa was ruler of Bahrain from 1961 until his death. He led the country to independence from British protection in August 1971 and took the title emir. A constitution of 1973 created an elected assembly, which he dissolved in 1975. With modest oil reserves, Bahrain under his rule developed as a banking and services centre, linked to Saudi Arabia by causeway in 1986. His son Hamad succeeded him.
