Aundh State

1699 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Aundh

A small Maratha state of the Deccan ruled by the Pant Pratinidhi family, remembered for the Aundh Experiment in village self-government.

Origins

Aundh was granted in 1699 to Parshuram Trimbak, appointed Pratinidhi (viceregent) by the Maratha king Rajaram. His Brahmin family held the hereditary title of Pant Pratinidhi and the lands attached to it.

Rule and society

The rulers governed a dry Deccan territory near Satara. Bhawanrao Pant Pratinidhi, who reigned from 1909 to 1947, promoted the surya namaskar exercise and the arts, and in 1938, with the advice of Gandhi, introduced the Aundh Experiment, handing power to village panchayats under a constitution drafted with Maurice Frydman.

Decline and legacy

Aundh merged into Bombay Province in 1948 and became part of Maharashtra in 1960, in Satara district.
