Barony of Arcadia

1209 CE – 1432 CE (approx.) · capital Arcadia (Kyparissia)

Barony in the south-western Peloponnese around the castle of Arcadia (Kyparissia), the last refuge of the last prince of Achaea.

Origins

Arcadia, the medieval name of Kyparissia, was one of the domains held by the Villehardouin family after the conquest of the Morea, together with Kalamata, and was organised as a barony of the Principality of Achaea in the early 13th century.

Rule and society

The barony centred on the coastal castle above Kyparissia and its fertile surroundings, and was held by a succession of Frankish families, among them the Le Maure. In the late 14th century it passed to the Genoese Zaccaria family through Andronikos Asen Zaccaria, whose son Centurione II Zaccaria became Prince of Achaea in 1404.

Decline and legacy

As the Byzantines of the Despotate of the Morea conquered the rest of the principality, Centurione II retreated to Arcadia. After his death in 1432 Thomas Palaiologos took it over, ending Latin rule in the region.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
