County of Pallars Sobirà

1011 CE – 1491 CE · capital Sort

A remote Pyrenean county around Sort whose counts kept a degree of independence until 1491, the last of the old Catalan counties to be extinguished.

Origins

It was formed in 1011 when Count Sunyer of Pallars divided his lands between his sons. Guillem II received the high valleys of the Noguera Pallaresa around Sort and the Àneu valleys, while his brother Ramon III took the lower County of Pallars Jussà.

Rule and society

A mountain land of pastures, iron and small villages, Pallars Sobirà was ruled by a line of counts from Sort and the castle of Valencia d'Àneu. They became vassals of the Counts of Barcelona and later the Crown of Aragon, but kept wide local powers. Many bore the names Artau and Hug Roger.

Decline and legacy

Count Hug Roger III sided against King John II in the Catalan civil war of 1462-1472 and later resisted Ferdinand II. Defeated in 1487, he lost his county, which was confiscated in 1491 and given to the Cardona family as the Marquisate of Pallars.
