Person
Abel, King of Denmark
Abel was King of Denmark from 1250 to 1252 and before that Duke of Schleswig. A son of Valdemar II, he quarrelled with his brother King Eric IV, and when Eric was murdered in 1250 Abel was suspected of the crime. He was killed fighting the Frisians in 1252. His descendants held Schleswig as a hereditary duchy, loosening its ties to the Danish crown.
