Schlei

The Schlei is a long, narrow inlet of the Baltic Sea in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, reaching about 40 kilometres inland. The Viking Age town of Hedeby stood near its western end, and the town of Schleswig, later capital of the Duchy of Schleswig, grew up on its shore. Its sheltered waters linked Baltic trade to the short overland route towards the North Sea.
