Canute Lavard

1096–1131 · 12th century · Also known as Knud Lavard

Canute Lavard was a Danish prince, son of King Eric I, who became Duke of Schleswig around 1115. He defended the border against the Wends and gained authority among the Obotrites as their prince. His popularity alarmed his cousin Magnus, who murdered him in 1131, sparking civil war. He was canonised in 1170, and his son became King Valdemar I.
