Al-Qa'im
Al-Qa'im was an Abbasid caliph of the eleventh century whose authority was dominated first by the Shi'a Buyids. In 1055 the Seljuk leader Tughril entered Baghdad and freed him from Buyid control. Al-Qa'im granted Tughril the title of sultan, legitimising the Seljuk Empire as protector of Sunni Islam.
