Alatheus

fl. 376–380 · 4th century

Alatheus was a chieftain of the Greuthungi Goths who, with Saphrax, acted as guardian of the boy-king Vithericus after the Huns overran their people around 375. In 376 they crossed the Danube into the Roman Empire without permission and joined the Tervingi under Fritigern. Their cavalry helped destroy the Roman army of Emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378.
