Saphrax

fl. 376–380 · 4th century

Saphrax was a leader of the Greuthungi Goths who, with Alatheus, led part of the people across the Danube into Roman territory in 376 after the Hunnic invasion. Together with the Tervingi of Fritigern they fought the Romans in the Gothic War, and the sudden arrival of their cavalry decided the Battle of Adrianople in 378. The historian Ammianus Marcellinus is the main source for his career.
