Alfonso III of Aragon

1265–1291 · 13th century · Also known as Alfonso the Liberal

Alfonso III of Aragon (1265–1291), called the Liberal, was King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona from 1285. Facing the noble Union of Aragon, he granted the Privilege of the Union in 1287, which greatly limited royal power. In the same year he conquered Muslim Menorca, enslaving or expelling much of its population. He died in 1291 and was succeeded by his brother James II.
