Person
Alptakin
Alptakin was a Turkish military commander who had served the Buyids in Iraq before seizing Damascus in 975 and resisting the Fatimid advance into Syria. Allied with the Qarmatians, he was defeated by the Fatimid caliph al-Aziz near Ramla in 978 and captured. Al-Aziz pardoned him and took him into his service in Cairo, a sign of the Fatimids' growing reliance on Turkish soldiers.
