Animism

Also known as animist

Animism refers to religious beliefs that attribute spiritual presence to natural features, animals, places and ancestors. Such traditional religions were widely practised in West and Central Africa. In the Ghana Empire, the royal court maintained traditional religion alongside Muslim traders, and in the Wadai Empire non-Muslim populations practising such beliefs were raided for captives.
