Azariqa

c. 684–699 · 7th century

The Azariqa were the most militant faction of the Kharijites, named after their leader Nafi ibn al-Azraq, who broke away at Basra around 684. They declared Muslims who did not join them unbelievers and held that their women and children could lawfully be killed. They fought the Zubayrid and Umayyad governors of Iraq and Iran until al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufra destroyed them around 699.
