Bab-el-Mandeb
The Bab-el-Mandeb is the strait, about 30 kilometres wide at its narrowest, between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Djibouti and Eritrea in Africa, joining the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Since the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 it has been one of the world's busiest shipping routes, carrying much of the trade between Europe and Asia.
