Battle of Chester

c. 615 · 7th century

The Battle of Chester was fought around 615 near Chester, where Æthelfrith of Northumbria defeated the Britons of Powys and their allies. According to Bede, Æthelfrith slaughtered many monks of Bangor-on-Dee who had come to pray for the British army. The Welsh king Selyf ap Cynan of Powys was among the dead, and the victory weakened the links between the Britons of Wales and those of the north.
