Battle of Cynoscephalae

197 BCE · 2nd century BCE · Part of the Second Macedonian War

The Battle of Cynoscephalae was fought in 197 BCE in Thessaly between the Roman army of Titus Quinctius Flamininus and the Macedonian army of Philip V. In hilly ground and mist, the Roman legions, helped by elephants and by a tribune's attack on the rear of the phalanx, overcame the Macedonian phalanx. The defeat ended the Second Macedonian War and forced Philip to give up his possessions in Greece.
