Battle of Cynoscephalae (364 BCE)

364 BCE · 4th century BCE

The Battle of Cynoscephalae in 364 BCE was fought in Thessaly between a Theban-led army under Pelopidas and Alexander, tyrant of Pherae. The Thebans and their Thessalian allies won the battle, but Pelopidas was killed while charging at Alexander in person. Thebes later forced Alexander to submit, but the loss of Pelopidas deprived the city of one of its two great commanders.
