Battle of Haliartus

395 BCE · 4th century BCE · Part of the Corinthian War

The Battle of Haliartus was fought in 395 BCE outside the Boeotian city of Haliartus at the start of the Corinthian War. The Spartan commander Lysander attacked the city before the main Spartan army under King Pausanias arrived, and was killed when the Thebans and the defenders sallied out. His death was a serious blow to Sparta, and Pausanias withdrew from Boeotia under truce and was later exiled.
