Battle of Idistaviso
The Battle of Idistaviso was fought in 16 CE on a plain near the Weser in northern Germany, between eight Roman legions with auxiliaries under Germanicus and a coalition of Germanic tribes led by Arminius. Tacitus describes it as a heavy Roman victory that partly avenged the Teutoburg Forest disaster of 9 CE. Arminius escaped, and Rome soon gave up plans to conquer Germany beyond the Rhine.
