Cheontae

1097 · 11th century · Also known as Korean Tiantai

Cheontae is the Korean form of the Tiantai school of Buddhism, which centres on the Lotus Sutra. It was established as a separate order in Goryeo in 1097 by the monk Uicheon, who sought to reconcile doctrinal study with meditation and to unite the competing Buddhist schools. Revived in the twentieth century, it is today one of the largest Buddhist orders in South Korea.
