Cleomenes I

r. c. 520–490 BCE · 6th century BCE

Cleomenes I was an Agiad king of Sparta who reigned from about 520 to 490 BCE. He expelled the tyrant Hippias from Athens in 510 BCE and crushed Argos at the Battle of Sepeia in 494 BCE, making Sparta the dominant power of the Peloponnese. Accused of bribing the Delphic oracle to depose his fellow king Demaratus, he died in disgrace, reportedly by suicide.
