Colony of Natal

1843–1910 · 19th century · Also known as Natal Colony

The Colony of Natal was a British colony on the south-east coast of Africa, annexed in 1843 after the Boer republic of Natalia was taken over, with its capital at Pietermaritzburg and its port at Durban. Bordering the Zulu Kingdom on the Thukela River, it developed a sugar economy using indentured Indian labour. In 1910 it became a province of the Union of South Africa.
