Diocese of Hispania

c. 300–5th century · 5th century · Also known as Diocese of the Spains

The Diocese of Hispania, or Diocese of the Spains, was a civil administrative unit of the late Roman Empire created by Diocletian's reforms around 300. It grouped the provinces of the Iberian Peninsula, among them Lusitania, Baetica, Carthaginiensis, Tarraconensis and Gallaecia, with Mauretania Tingitana in north Africa and later the Balearic Islands. A vicar, probably resident at Emerita Augusta, governed it under the praetorian prefecture of the Gauls.
