Dumbarton Rock
Dumbarton Rock is a volcanic plug on the north bank of the Clyde in western Scotland, known in Brittonic as Alt Clut, 'rock of the Clyde'. It was the chief fortress of the British kings of Strathclyde from at least the 5th century until Viking forces from Dublin besieged and sacked it in 870, after which the kingdom's centre moved to Govan.
