Francisco de Lacerda e Almeida

1753–1798 · 18th century · Also known as Francisco José de Lacerda e Almeida

Francisco José de Lacerda e Almeida was a Brazilian-born Portuguese mathematician and explorer. After surveying the borders of Brazil, he was appointed governor of the Rivers of Sena in Mozambique and in 1798 led an expedition from Tete towards the Kingdom of Kazembe, hoping to open a route across Africa to Angola. He reached Kazembe's capital but died there of fever in October 1798, and his diary became an early source on the region.
