Gemistos Plethon

c. 1355–1454 · 15th century · Also known as George Gemistos Plethon, Plethon

George Gemistos Plethon was a Byzantine philosopher who taught at Mistra in the Despotate of the Morea. A follower of Plato, he proposed radical reforms of the Morea's government, army and land, and wrote a Book of Laws describing a revived pagan religion, which was later burned. His lectures at the Council of Florence in 1438–1439 inspired Italian interest in Plato.
