Giambattista Vico

1668–1744 · 18th century

Giambattista Vico (1668–1744) was a Neapolitan philosopher and professor of rhetoric at the University of Naples. In his New Science (1725) he argued that human societies pass through recurring ages of gods, heroes and men, and that history can be understood because people made it. Little read in his lifetime, he later influenced the philosophy of history and the human sciences.
