Hesbaye

Also known as Haspengouw

The Hesbaye (Dutch Haspengouw) is a fertile loess plateau in eastern Belgium, between the Dyle, the Meuse and the Demer, spreading across the provinces of Liège, Limburg, Namur and Brabant. A Carolingian county in the early Middle Ages, it later lay largely within the prince-bishopric of Liège and the County of Loon. It is known for cereals, sugar beet and fruit orchards.
