High Priest of Amun
The High Priest of Amun was the chief priest of the god Amun at Thebes, controlling the god's vast temple estates. As royal power weakened in the late Twentieth Dynasty, the high priests became a rival authority to the pharaoh. By around 1100 BCE they effectively ruled Upper Egypt, marking the end of the Egyptian New Kingdom.
