Herihor

fl. c. 1080 BCE · 11th century BCE

Herihor was an Egyptian army officer who became High Priest of Amun at Thebes around 1080 BCE, in the last years of Ramesses XI and the Twentieth Dynasty. Combining military command, the post of viceroy of Kush and the high priesthood, he ruled Upper Egypt in practice, and in reliefs at the Temple of Khonsu at Karnak he took royal titles. His time marks the division of Egypt between the priests at Thebes and the kings at Tanis.
