Tanis
Tanis was an ancient city in the north-eastern Nile Delta of Egypt. At the end of the New Kingdom it became the seat of Smendes, who controlled Lower Egypt while the High Priests of Amun governed Upper Egypt from Thebes. Accounts of the Egyptian Empire New Kingdom cite this division as evidence that the New Kingdom ended through administrative dissolution rather than conquest.
