Hvar
Hvar is a Croatian island in the central Adriatic. Greeks from Paros founded the colony of Pharos there in 384 BCE, and the Stari Grad Plain preserves their field divisions as a World Heritage Site. In the Middle Ages the island was held by the Narentines, Croatia-Hungary and, from 1420 to 1797, Venice, under which Hvar town flourished as a naval base.
