Imperator Romanorum

Also known as Emperor of the Romans

Imperator Romanorum, meaning Emperor of the Romans, was the imperial title revived in the West when Charlemagne was crowned by the pope in 800. It claimed continuity with the Roman Empire. It was a founding element of the Carolingian Empire's ideology and was later taken up by the Holy Roman Emperors.
