Imperial Flanders
Imperial Flanders was the part of the County of Flanders east of the Scheldt that the counts held as a fief of the Holy Roman Empire rather than of the French crown. Acquired by Baldwin IV and Baldwin V in the eleventh century, it included the Land of Aalst and the Four Offices. It gave the counts a foothold in the Empire and made them vassals of both the French king and the emperor.
