Indonesian National Armed Forces
The Indonesian National Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia, TNI) are the army, navy and air force of Indonesia. They grew out of the militias and security forces formed in 1945 to fight the returning Dutch, and 5 October is kept as Armed Forces Day. Under Suharto's New Order the doctrine of dual function gave officers a role in government, which was dismantled after 1998, when the police were also separated from the military.
