Operation Trikora

1961–1962 · 20th century · Also known as Tri Komando Rakyat

Operation Trikora was the Indonesian campaign of 1961–1962 to take western New Guinea from the Netherlands, named after the 'People's Triple Command' that Sukarno proclaimed in December 1961. Indonesian forces, under a command led by Suharto, landed paratroops and infiltrators while the Dutch lost a naval clash in the Arafura Sea. Under American pressure the Netherlands signed the New York Agreement of August 1962, and after a brief United Nations administration the territory passed to Indonesia in 1963.
