Istakhr
Istakhr was an ancient city in Fars, south-western Iran, a few kilometres north of Persepolis. After the Achaemenid period it became the main city of Persis, and in the early 3rd century CE it was the home of the Sasanian family, whose temple of Anahita stood there. It remained the chief city of Fars until the Arab conquest of the 7th century, when Shiraz replaced it, and was later abandoned.
