James the Great

d. c. 44 CE · 1st century · Also known as James, son of Zebedee, Saint James the Great

James the Great, son of Zebedee, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, executed in Jerusalem by Herod Agrippa I around 44 CE. Medieval tradition held that his body had been carried to Galicia, and the discovery of his supposed tomb at Compostela in the early 9th century, under Alfonso II of Asturias, created one of Christendom's great pilgrimage centres and made him patron of Christian Spain.
