Jebtsundamba Khutughtu
The Jebtsundamba Khutughtu is the title of the highest reincarnate lama of Mongolian Buddhism, head of the Gelug school in Mongolia. The line began with Zanabazar (1635–1723), son of the Tüsheet Khan, and from the third holder the incarnations were found in Tibet. The eighth, known as the Bogd Khan, became ruler of independent Mongolia in 1911; after his death in 1924 the communist government forbade a successor, though later incarnations were recognised in exile.
