Jimyōin line

Also known as Jimyōin-tō

The Jimyōin line was a branch of the Japanese imperial family descended from Emperor Go-Fukakusa, rival to the Daikakuji line of his brother Emperor Kameyama. From the late 13th century the two lines contested the throne, and the Kamakura shogunate arranged for them to alternate. After 1336 the Jimyōin emperors formed the Northern Court backed by the Ashikaga shoguns, and all later emperors of Japan descend from them.
