Kanesatake
Kanesatake is a Mohawk community on the Ottawa river west of Montreal, in Quebec, next to the town of Oka. It originated in a Sulpician mission founded in the early 18th century, and its people's long dispute over land with the Sulpicians and the town led in 1990 to the Oka crisis, a 78-day armed stand-off over plans to extend a golf course onto a Mohawk burial ground.
