Khanty

Also known as Ostyaks

The Khanty, formerly called Ostyaks, are a Finno-Ugric people of western Siberia, living mainly along the Ob and Irtysh and their tributaries in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Traditionally hunters, fishers and reindeer herders, they paid fur tribute to the Khanate of Sibir and then to Russia. Their language is close to Mansi and, more distantly, related to Hungarian.
